Hearing Round Two:
The vast majority of the questioning seems directed at DJ. Perhaps the Senators already went at Kris under a confidentiality shield? Even so, a lot of the questioning of DJ appears to deal with confidential statements and issues.
It seemed like she won over everyone except for Sen. Sessions, who sought to paint her as an activist & progressive. Neither label should be viewed as negative, in my opinion.
And I don’t know Hatch’s thoughts. He wanted to ask some questions but was called away. Perhaps his questions will be added to the record.
One thing that she tried to drive home was the idea that the role of the OLC must be nonpartisan–it cannot simply rubber stamp the president’s decisions. Related, it must be scrutinized by the public (esp. legal thinkers). Sen. Whitehouse drove home the related note (one embraced, it seems, by the Obama administration) that classification ought to err on the side of disclosure.
I must say, for such an incredible legal force and brilliant mind, Professor Johnsen is quite friendly–always has a kind word, and tried to get her friends and family all entered into the congressional record. Mad props.
